“Jewish pilgrims? Jewish shrines? Jewish saints?” will focus on the modern manifestations of Jewish pilgrimage: pilgrimages to the tombs of Hassidic rabbis in eastern Europe, to the tombs of Maghrebi hahamim in Morocco, to sites connected with the Holocaust, and to Israel.




David Gitlitz is professor emeritus of Hispanic Studies at the University of Rhode Island. He is the author of various books on Hispanic and Sephardic culture, including Secrecy and Deceit: The Religion of the Crypto-Jews, which was an alternate selection of the History Book Club and winner of the 1996 National Jewish Book Award for Sephardic Studies and the 1997 Lucy B. Dawidowicz Prize for History. Gitlitz and his wife, Linda Kay Davidson, met on the Road on their first pilgrimage to Santiago in 1975. Together they wrote The Pilgrimage Road to Santiago, Pilgrimage and the Jews, and A Drizzle of Honey: The Lives and Recipes of Spain's Secret Jews, for which they won the National Jewish Book Award and the award for Distinguished Scholarship from the International Association of Culinary Professionals. producer and educator in the Jewish ethnomusicology and cultural history fields.
